An unimpressive performance by the NSW team in round one of the Sheffield Shield competition was still enough to topple Warne's Bushrangers. Almost single-handedly Steve Waugh tore apart the Vic's attack posting a century in each innings including scoring his first 50 in 44 balls in devistating fashion. This set up a big enough lead for Stuart MacGill to clean up the Vic's second innings and avoid what should have been their first loss. The main concern for the NSW team was the poor form shown by their spearhead quickie in Glenn McGrath who struggled to get wickets in either innings. We hope for a much improved performance from him in the next round.
QUEENSLAND - Manager: Tony Noyeaux
After a horrific few days in the field, Coach Noyeaux made everyone in the team, except Ian Healy (who caught 12 catches), sit through an embarrassing 14 dropped catches, 9 of which were dropped in the first innings. Needless to say, a lot more effort has gone into fielding this week. Of course, it wasn't all dark clouds in Queensland, after all, the Bulls crushed the Tasmanian side by 10 wickets. The bowling performance was superb, pity though so many chances were missed. The two best single performances of the match were by Maher 127no and Dawes 72, they put together a league record making 8th wicket stand of 142 runs.
Needing just 78 runs in the 2nd innnings, the Bulls cruised home without loss of wicket. This QLD team is looking very strong this year, a definite Shield hope. Coach Noyeaux is making no team changes this week, no injuries to concern the Queensland fans at this point.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Manager: Trevor Hansford
The South Australian manager gave his team a blast after their first match against Western Australia. His main concern was the dropped catches. South Australia dropped a massive 10 catches during the game. It was also disappointing that no batsmen would stick around on the last day to try and play out a draw. To be bowled out in less than 38 overs was pathetic. However there is unlikely to be many changes in the team except for Faull who was injured. At the time of going to press it was unknown who will be replacing him.
TASMANIA - Manager: Nick Rogers
VICTORIA - Manager: "Westie"
Well not a great start to the season but we can take a lot from that with only losing by 26 runs we were able to keep it up to the N.S.W team. We will be looking for something from Reiffel who had a less than good game and batsmen Elliott and Craig will be trying to score some runs. Harvey comes in for Fleming who is out injured.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Manager: Chris Rogers
The Western Warriors proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with in the Sheffield Shield this season, defeating the Southern Redbacks by 329 runs at Adelaide Oval.
The South Australian side, led by experienced players such as Blewett, Lehmann & Gillespie were no match for the overall skill of the Western Warriors and their hero for the match Michael Hussey. Hussey smashed 172, including 20 fours, as WA amassed 470 at around four an over. Vaughan and Siddons took to the WA attack, at one stage the score was 1/239. But WA managed to keep the Redbacks to a score of 345. Simon Katich and Adam Gilchrist made the runs in WA's second innings, and when Gilchrist declared at 8/317, South Australia needed 443 runs in just over a day. However that much time was not required as Nicholson and Julian tore through the Redbacks' lineup to dismiss them for 113.
Manager Chris Rogers is now confident that his side can beat Queensland and shoot to the top of the table. "The boys played really well," he said. "Unluckily for us, Jo Angel will be out for a match so our bowling may be a bit depleted, but we still can have a crack at Queensland's bowlers."
Rogers named Michael Hussey as the player of the match.
NEW SOUTH WALES 2nd XI - Manager: Wally Cowan
The NSW 2nd XI started the season the way that we plan to continue, with a convincing win against a Victorian team with several experienced players. Several of the NSW 2nd XI players have been hurt by criticism that they are not up to Shield standard and they intend to show in this league that they can fill in for the Test stars when needed. Davison and Phelps got the team off to a good start with a 96 run partnership and then Brad Haddin scored 143 with Brad McNamara chipping in with 61 to help us to a score of 401. Freddie Freedman then took 6 wickets to leave the Vics all out for just 118. The Vics put up a better effort in the 2nd innings to make 368 but Davison and Phelps had no trouble in getting the 88 runs needed. Hopefully we can continue the good work this week against South Australia who also had a win in Round 1.
QUEENSLAND 2nd XI - Manager: Bradley Ashcroft
Our performance last round at Allan Border Field was not very good. Our batting simply wasn't good enough and our bowling was ok at times but was also shocking. I'm not saying the guys didn't try, we were simply beaten by a better team. This week I'm going to make them train their butts off. Next week we should hopefully put up a better performance.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA 2nd XI - Manager: Tyrone Marshall
Kumble Joins World Elite
This week in Delhi, Anil Kumble, the Indian leg spinner described on CricInfo as a Leg Break Googly bowler, ripped his way into the record books becoming only the second person to take all 10 wickets in an innings, after Jim Laker was the first with figures of 10/53.
Kumble’s new found brilliance wasn’t as good as Laker after finishing with figures of 26.3 overs, 9 maidens and 10 wickets for 74. Laker managed to take 10/53 in that famous 1956, Old Trafford test battle.
Kumble was born in Bangalore on the 17th October 1970, so he still has a good 8 years if not more left in him. The havoc all started in the 25th over as Kumble bowled Afridi, and broke up a surprise 101 opening wicket stand. Before lunch, it had been described as clueless captaincy by Azharuddin and poor bowling by India letting Pakistan back into the match, but now Kumble was around that was over as he took another wicket next ball.
36 Overs later Kumble had wrote himself into the record breaks and saved the series for India. Well done Anil.
TASMANIA 2nd XI - Manager: Dave Hickey
At the start of this season, several of the Tasmanian 2nd XI players vowed to put enormous pressure on players in the top side. After Round 1 there would be several players in the No.1 team looking over their shoulders after some outstanding performances which saw the Devils record an innings victory over Queensland. Leading the way were batting all-rounder Scott Kremerskothen with an unbeaten 193, keeper/batsman Todd Pinnington with 101 and paceman Damien Wright with match figures of 10/102, including 7/42 in the 2nd innings.
Manager Dave Hickey was impressed by the victory but he declined to comment further, stating only that "there is a long way to go and this is only the start - talk to me in a couple of weeks and I'll tell you how we're doing." Hickey added that his was a young and enthusiastic team who "do not need to read how good they are just yet." Clearly, he does not wish to put too much pressure on his young team but if Round 1 is any indication, we will be hearing a lot more about the Tasmanians before the end of the season.
VICTORIA 2nd XI - Manager: Christo McDonald
After the first round I can see it is going a bit harder than I expected it to be. The bowlers were too used to bowling in the nets and were continually bowling short. The batsmen were coming on fine, especially in the second innings. We are going to work on fielding & bowling this week. Tasmania 2nd can expect a much harder task than they had against Queensland 2nd.
I am planning on keeping the same side, maybe using different batting & bowling combinations.
The thinking here is that NSW 2nd were lucky in coming away with a win against us. We will meet again later in the season.
